MCA legal task bureau head Tay Puay Chuan was reported by The Star Online today as saying that legal action would be instituted on the DAP parliamentarian if he did not withdraw his allegation.
“We have concluded that his statement is tantamount to defamation. We want YB Lim to withdraw his statement and apologise openly to MCA,” he was quoted as saying.
“Otherwise, we would not hesitate to commence legal action against him and ask for damages,” Tay added. “If he has not responded by then, we will continue with civil action and serve him a legal notice.”
The report said Lim had told the media in parliament earlier this week that according to his sources MCA had never used its own funds in donating to Chinese schools.
He reportedly said that according to information he obtained MCA never took from its own coffers to give allocations to Chinese schools, and that the party put into its own “pocket” money derived from public donations and the government.
MCA deputy president and Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong had on March 15 refuted Lim’s allegation by saying MCA used its own funds to assist Chinese schools and had also built Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Wee also said DAP had not built so much as a kindergarten.
He also responded to Lim’s challenge for MCA to declare its assets and the amount spent on the Chinese community by asking DAP to do the same.
“If that is the case, DAP should likewise declare the amount it has given,” Wee said, adding: “It would be shameful on them because I do not think they give a single sen to Chinese schools.”
