Suriana’s chairman, well-known child rights activist James Nayagam, told FMT the centre was scheduled to open in three months’ time. It will be located in Petaling Jaya.
Nayagam said the aim was to help children face the aftermath of sexual abuse.
“After children receive treatment at hospital, they are usually sent back home, but there is no follow up,” he said.
“With the centre, we will be able to monitor and rehabilitate the child after he or she has received physical treatment from the hospital.
“We will be able to work closely with parents towards restoring the mental and emotional state of the child.”
He said the idea for the centre was conceived after “numerous requests” from parents and paediatricians, psychiatrists and other doctors for such a facility.
He said the centre would open on Saturdays and Sundays. Sexually abused children will be assessed and counselled. They will then undergo therapies suitable for their specific conditions.
Nayagam said a fee would be charged for the therapy but “leeway will be given” to those with financial difficulties.
