KUALA LUMPUR: Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli today questioned the delay in a government project to build a higher education centre in Taman Ilmu, Terengganu, which began in 2004.

He said the project, worth almost RM300 million, had been started under former Terengganu menteri besar Idris Jusoh, who is now the higher education minister.

According to Rafizi, the project’s groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2004 and the project was supposed to be finished in March 2009.

“But as of Feb 1, the project is yet to be completed,” he said.

Although media reports quoted present Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman as saying the project would be completed this October, visits to the site appear to show otherwise, Rafizi claimed.

He said Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrain and Batu Burok assemblyman Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi had recently visited the project site.

“The visit showed that the project is yet to be completed and a lot of facilities had been vandalised,” he said, adding that parts of the roofing and wiring had been stolen.

Rafizi said media reports had also stated that Ahmad Razif was in discussions with Idris to ensure the project was finally completed.

“We would like to warn Idris, who is now the minister of higher education, not to use funds from his ministry on the project,” the Pandan MP said.
