KUALA LUMPUR: A total 82,383 Malaysians were declared bankrupt by the courts between 2013 and 2016.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said said Selangor had the most cases — 22,593.

This was followed by Johor (12,028 cases) and Federal Territories (11,687 cases).

Perlis had the least number of bankruptcies in this period, with only 354 cases recorded.

Azalina was responding to a question from Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut), who wanted to know the statistics on bankruptcy by state, gender and among civil servants.

Azalina said there were 3,276 bankruptcy cases among civil servants between 2013 and 2016.

She also said the government had undertaken several measures to reduce cases of bankruptcy through the Malaysian Insolvency Department.
