EAIC said in a statement yesterday that it had set up a probe team to determine, among others, whether there was any misconduct including treatment of a criminal nature by police officers in the handling of the detainee, M Thanaseelan, 43.
“The probe will be carried out in a comprehensive and transparent manner without prejudice and favouritism,” EAIC said.
It said Thanaseelan was arrested along with two other men at about 2am on Feb 22 on suspicion of burglary.
He was found unconscious in the lockup at 1.50am on Feb 25 and was confirmed dead by an assistant medical officer on duty, the EAIC said. A post-mortem was conducted on the body on Feb 27 at Sungai Buloh Hospital.
