Man who stole RM5,000 from 3 bank customers jailed

The unemployed man stole the money while pretending to help them make withdrawals at automated teller machines in Johor Bahru.

JOHOR BAHRU:
An unemployed man was sentenced to a total of 15 months’ jail and two strokes of the cane by the Magistrate’s Court here today for stealing RM5,000 from three bank customers between Dec 24 last year and Jan 13 this year.

Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias handed down the sentence on S Mohan, who pleaded guilty to the charges.

Mohan, 47, stole the money from the victims while on the pretext of helping them make withdrawals at the automated teller machine (ATM)

He was sentenced to four months’ jail on the first count of stealing RM2,000 from a bank customer at a bank in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah here about 9am on Dec 24 last year.

Mohan, who is from Penang, was sentenced to five months’ jail and a stroke of the cane on the charge of stealing RM1,500 from a customer at a bank in Bandar Baru Uda here about 9am last Jan 10.

On the third count, for stealing RM1,500 from a customer at another bank in Bandar Baru Uda at 10.52am last Jan 13, he was sentenced to six months’ jail and a stroke of the cane.

Azlan Shah ordered Mohan to serve the jail sentences concurrently from today.

The charges against Mohan were made under Section 379 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment of up to seven years, or fine, or both, and for the subsequent offence, imprisonment and fine, or whipping, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Mohan, who was unrepresented, said his wife was currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Ghazali.
