Uber and Grab go for the jugular in frenzied price war

While Uber is offering rides for only 99 sen all day, Grab is offering zero fares for short rides making commuters the real winners in this price war.

PETALING JAYA:
It’s anybody’s guess how the frenzied price war between two of the country’s ride-hailing companies is going to pan out but one thing’s for sure – it is the customer who will end up the biggest winner after paying next to nothing as they zip around KL and other city centres.

On Feb 13, Uber announced they would be charging a measly 99 sen flat rate, all day, every day for two weeks ending Feb 26 to any UberX commuter wishing to take a trip under 4 km in the Klang Valley.

Their promo line reads: “KL, you might have 99 problems but a ride ain’t one!”

Attacking the competition in one fell swoop, Grab announced their “Zero Fares, Zero Problems!” campaign, giving commuters of either GrabCar or GrabTaxi the rare opportunity to enjoy short rides absolutely free, provided each trip costs RM7 or less.

Grab’s offer is open to commuters within the Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, Penang, Malacca and Kota Kinabalu and will run from Feb 14 to Feb 28.

While Uber says their offer applies even during KL’s notorious peak hours when others charge fares higher than usual in sometimes gridlocked traffic, Grab is giving the competition a run for their money, offering 10 lucky winners a pair of GSC movie passes if they are chosen after posting Grab’s promo on social media and tagging seven friends.

As the two ride-hailing companies slug it out for the most number of passengers, commuters can make the most of Valentine’s Day tonight and save some precious cash as they enjoy a night out on the town with their loved ones.
