Supermodel International Malaysia 2017, featuring 20 bikini-clad contestants, was to be held at a resort in Bangi, Selangor, but drew protests from the Serdang PAS Youth, who said it undermined the values of the Muslim-majority town.
On its Facebook, event organiser I Creative Event announced that the bikini section of the event was “officially cancelled”, but declined further comment when contacted by FMT.
Several photographs of bikini models uploaded on the Facebook page were also removed.
Yesterday, Serdang PAS Youth chief Rosli Jusoh said the contest did not reflect Bangi’s status as a university town.
“We urge the authorities to use all available legal means to stop this programme,” he said, urging the state government, local council and Islamic authorities to stop the event.
“We also urge all Muslim NGOs, youth and student movements in Selangor and areas surrounding Bangi to express their objections and stop this unbeneficial programme.”
