KUANTAN: The grandfather of Nureen Ain Juwita Mohd Sharif, 10, who drowned along with two other children at a disused bauxite mining pool in Taman Sungai Karang Jaya in Beserah near here yesterday, intends to sue the parties responsible for the mining.

Aidil Omar, 78, said they should have been more responsible and filled up the pool and not abandoned the site.

“I am going to sue them… I am very sad because she was very close to me, she used to come to my house every day to play.

“They should have taken matters more seriously because they were mining for bauxite close to a residential area. I will be seeking legal advice before I make my next move,” he told Bernama when met at his home today.

Aidil, a retired soldier, said he hoped his action would serve as a lesson to those out to make a quick buck but were negligent where it came to people’s safety.

He also urged the relevant authorities to fill up the pool with earth to prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy.

Recounting the child’s last hours, Aidil said Nureen Ain had lunch with him before asking his wife Wan Zauwiyah Wan Omar, 78, for pocket money to buy a few things at a nearby shop at 2.30pm (yesterday).

“Later I received the shocking news that she had drowned,” he said, sobbing.

In the incident at 5pm yesterday, Nureen Ain and siblings Salsabila Zuhairi, 12, and Mahathir Mohamad Zuhairi, seven, drowned while playing near the pool.

The remains of the two siblings were buried in a single grave, in Trong, about 20km from here, this morning.

Earlier, their remains arrived in a hearse at the home of their parents Norazilah Mudzaffar Shah, 32, and Zuhairi Shukor, 52, in Kampung Jarum Mas, Sungai Nyior, at 7.15am from the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Kuantan.

The siblings were laid to rest at the Sungai Jarum Mas Muslim Cemetery, at 11.15am.

The siblings’ uncle, Norhamizi Sapian Suri, 38, when met at the cemetery, apologised to the media because both the children’s parents were too overwhelmed to be interviewed.

“I hope something is done to prevent a recurrence of such an incident,” he said.

In the meantime, he thanked the Regent of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah for his assistance in delivering the remains of the siblings to their parents.
