PETALING JAYA:
The Kelantan Forestry Department (KFD) destroyed a blockade and arrested five of the Orang Asli manning it at Simpang Petei, Gua Musang, this morning.

A Jaringan Orang Asal SeMalaysia spokesperson told FMT in an email that 30 KFD officers entered the scene and demolished the blockade at 11.30am.

Motorcycles belonging to the Orang Asli were also seized.

In condemning the act, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) said KFD and the PAS-led Kelantan government had shown blatant disrespect for the Orang Asli community and their rights as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan said the blockade was a last-ditch attempt by the Orang Asli to protect the forest after all attempts to meet with the state government had proved futile.

“It is completely unacceptable that subsequent laws like the Forestry Act 1984 are used to deprive the Orang Asli of their enshrined rights under the Federal Constitution,” he said.

He demanded that the Kelantan government release the Orang Asli in custody without pressing charges.

In November last year, KFT dismantled blockades and arrested almost 50 Orang Asli activists against logging in Gua Musang.

The Orang Asli were later released.
