PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia will have no choice but to allow convicted serial rapist Selva Kumar Subbiah to return home should he be deported by Canada, reports Malay Mail Online today.

Selva Kumar will finish serving a 24-year jail term this month, but Putrajaya has yet to hear from Canada about his deportation afterwards.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamad said as Selva Kumar was a Malaysian citizen, he would be allowed home should he be deported.

“Usually they will inform us first, but so far we’ve not heard anything. But it is their right to deport anybody once the person’s legal sentence is completed,” Nur Jazlan said, referring to the Canadian authorities.

“He is a Malaysian citizen. He has the right to come back here. He has no known records.

“He didn’t commit the crime here. Most we can do is to put him on the watch-list.”

Nur Jazlan added that Selva Kumar could also be red-flagged under the sex offenders list, once it was set up.

This means that Selva Kumar will be allowed to live freely here “provided he does not break any of the laws”.

Selva Kumar was sentenced to 24 years in prison in 1992 after he was found guilty of 19 counts of sexual assault, 28 counts of administering a drug or noxious substance, 10 counts of various kinds of assault and a dozen other charges, including extortion.

Canadian news sources have dubbed him as possibly Canada’s worst rapist, who used powerful drugs to render his victims unconscious before he molested and raped them.

Canadian newspaper Toronto Star reported today that Selva Kumar would be deported to Malaysia following his mandatory release on Jan 29, despite warnings from prison staff that he had the potential to reoffend or even kill.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar was quoted saying that it would be “premature” to conclude Selva Kumar would be a threat without sufficient information.
