SUNGAI BULOH:
Two men’s attempt to kidnap a woman for ransom to pay off their debts to an Ah Long went awry when their van crashed into a tree and caught fire yesterday.

The 28-year-old victim, who is a manager of a curtain factory, was driving home when she was abducted by the duo in front of an international school in Sierramas at 6.30pm.

Sungai Buloh police chief Supt Dr Abdul Aziz Awang Darus said the victim was with her maid in her BMW car at the time.

The two men approached them and pulled the manager out of the car and into the white van, leaving the maid unharmed.

“The suspects then sped off towards Jalan Kuala Selangor.

“Along the way, the victim began struggling and screaming for help.

“This attracted the attention of concerned motorists who then gave chase.

“Realising that they were being chased, the suspects pulled over near a supermarket in Sungai Buloh and left the victim there.”

Aziz said the suspects fled towards Sungai Pelong but the van skidded, crashed into a tree and caught fire at Batu 15, Sungai Pelong.

“As soon as they got out of the van, they were beaten up by motorists still pursuing them. Police came and arrested them later.”

Aziz said initial investigation found that the suspects had suffered gambling losses and needed money to pay off their debts to the loan shark.

They had been observing the woman, who is also the curtain factory owner’s daughter, for a month before finally making the attempt to kidnap her for ransom, Aziz said.

“Police seized a parang, a knife, cash of over RM2,000, a coil of rope, a ransom note and a bag from the suspects.

“The white van, with fake registration number plates, was reported stolen in Jinjang.”

He said both the suspects, who are in their 20s, had been remanded for four days to facilitate further investigations under Section 365 of the Penal Code.
