KUALA LUMPUR:
The video clip of the “supergoal” scored by FIFA Puskas Award 2016 finalist Mohd Faiz Subri uploaded by FIFATV on Youtube has got a staggering 2,362,950 “hits” as of 3pm today, leaving his two other challengers far behind in his wake.

The Puskas Award is scheduled to be presented in Zurich, Switzerland, tomorrow (early Tuesday by Malaysian time) during The Best FIFA Football Awards 2016.

The other contenders, Brazil’s Johnath Marlone Azevedo da Silva and Venezuela’s woman player Daniuska Rodriguez have only had over one million views each.

The Penang striker’s aim at Puskas glory is courtesy of a spectacular free kick in a Super League match against Pahang on Feb 16 last year, with the ball curling from an impossible angle into the right corner of the net, leaving a bewildered Pahang goalkeeper — and football fans — in its wake.

The video of Marlone’s scissors kick goal in Corinthians 6-0 victory against Cobresal in the Copa Libertadores recorded 1,474,416 views while the goal by Daniuska, after leaving several defenders in her wake before finding the net against Colombia in the Sudamericano Women’s Under-17 championship, notched 1,157,572 hits.

The award is named after Hungarian football legend Ferenc Puskas who enjoyed huge success with Real Madrid in the 1950s and ’60s as well as with the highly successful Hungarian side of the same era.
