PETALING JAYA:
Heavy rains are likely as the year comes to a close in the week ahead, with floods again a high possibility in east coast states.

This is based on alerts posted by the meteorological department on its Facebook page yesterday and since the weekend, The Star reported today.

According to the department, the towns of Maran, Bera, Rompin, Pekan, Kuantan and Jerantut, all in Pahang, as well as most parts of Terengganu and Kelantan are likely to experience heavy rains and moderate intermittent showers until Wednesday during the mid north-east monsoon season.

“The heavy rain warning (Orange Stage) issued at 10.15pm on Dec 25 is still valid,” the Meteorological Department said in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, in the Klang Valley, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya were set to experience isolated rain until the end of the year, with downpours mostly in the afternoon and evening.

In the east coast, Terengganu has been on high alert since Dec 13, with forecast of heavy rains.

The daily reported that though some states in the peninsula have just seen flood waters recede, the heavy rains are expected to persist for those living in the east coast, due to the north-east monsoon.

Following the experience of floods earlier this year, the authorities are taking contingency measures to prepare for a similar situation with simulation exercises.

It was reported in The Star earlier that Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Madius Tangau had said that Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and eastern Johor were expected to get more than 500mm of rainfall this month.

Johor and Sarawak (Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu divisions) can also expect heavy downpours from Wednesday until Friday.
