KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno supreme council member has rejected a suggestion to create an exclusive Malay-based government comprising only of PAS and Umno.

Nazri Aziz said Barisan Nasional will not go down that road as it represents all races in Malaysia.

“I disagree. BN was not set up for just one community to rule Malaysia. I disagree with an exclusive Malay tie-up ruling Malaysia. We represent the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Kadazan and others.

“My response is that we work together to support our leader (Najib Razak), but an exclusive Malay government (with only Malays as leaders) is a no no,” he said after launching a wayang kulit exhibition to be held until Feb 28 at the Muzium Negara here.

Nazri, who is also tourism and culture minister, was responding to a call by Ibrahim Ali, president of the Malay right-wing group Perkasa, who asked PAS to remain as an independent party and set up an exclusive Malay government after the 14th general election.

Ibrahim suggested the prime minister come from Umno and the deputy prime minister from PAS.

Ibrahim was against PAS going back to Pakatan Harapan as it was better off teaming with Umno in administering the country.

He strongly felt BN was likely to win GE14 despite a crisis of confidence with the party, claiming studies indicated 90% of the people reject Najib.

Nazri said he disagreed that people did not like Najib.

“Of course, this is the work of the opposition because that is the person they want to topple.

“But the opposition does not have the monopoly to represent the opinions and feelings of ordinary Malaysians.

“Apart from BN’s smooth machinery and the popularity of MPs and state assemblymen, people do like Najib.

“He is also one of the important factors for us to win the next general election.”
