KUALA LUMPUR:
The High Court today granted the Selangor government’s application for a stay to stop the Election Commission (EC) from holding further inquiries for its proposed redelineation exercise.

However, the stay granted by judicial commissioner Azizul Azmi Adnan was only confined to Selangor.

Earlier today, lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan, representing the Selangor government, said they were seeking to stay the inquiry process for the whole of Peninsular Malaysia.

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali said the state government was happy with the decision.

“This is a very important decision for the nation as the High Court has accepted that state governments have the right to represent the people to ensure clean and fair elections in the future.”

The stay will be enforced until the trial begins in the High Court on Jan 20 next year.

“The state and the counsel will prepare our case. We strongly believe we have strong grounds.

“Selangor is a multicultural and multiracial state. We want to remain that way.”
