Malaysia Consumers Movement (MCM) president Darshan Singh Dhillon said such an achievement is indeed something to be proud of and suggests other projects can be carried out in the same manner.
“This mammoth achievement is indeed a historic and proud moment for all Malaysians. Not only has it been completed on time but it was done with a huge RM2 billion cost saving.
“This success implies that massive public infrastructure projects can be completed on time within budget if they are managed professionally and transparently, led by people with integrity.
“That is why MCM hopes that the same will apply to other public infrastructure projects as well,” Darshan said.
Congratulating Prime Minister Najib Razak and MRT Corp on the launch of the first phase of the MRT project, Darshan then urged the government to ensure the efficiency, affordability, reliability, safety and convenience for all users of this new public transport service.
The first phase of the MRT SBK line takes passengers from Sungai Buloh in Selangor to Semantan in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. It covers 12 stations and spans 23km. The second phase to Kajang, scheduled to be ready by mid-2017, will add another 28km to the line.
“For urban consumers, the MRT will not only be a great convenience but it will also help mitigate cost of living issues, including the cost saving on fuel and parking,” Darshan said adding that modern public transportation infrastructure is a core component in achieving developed nation status.
He also hoped that when the MRT project is fully completed, followed by the transportation blueprint being completed and fully operational, it will be a boon for the socio-economic development of our country.
“The fruits of all this effort and achievements will be enjoyed by generations to come,” he said.
