Zaid: Give voters a clear, simple choice

PETALING JAYA:
The latest opposition pact between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) has received the support of former minister Zaid Ibrahim.

In his latest blog posting, Zaid said now that an alliance has been forged, the key is to give voters a clear and simple choice – vote Najib out or vote for him to continue ruling the country.

“All over the world, voters want clarity and a clear choice. Those who voted for US President-elect Donald Trump did not even bother to check his policies, resumé or his strengths and weaknesses. They just wanted change.

“Similarly, British voters did not care about the consequence of Brexit, they just wanted out of the European Union,” the former defacto law minister under the Abdullah Badawi administration said.

Congratulating PPBM and PH for their courage and vision to sign a cooperation and collaboration arrangement, he said it was now left to be seen how the parties involved will be able to share the seats in taking on Umno/BN.

“Let’s be clear, this new pact is a basic political arrangement, and the goal is to defeat Umno/BN. It’s not at all about having common ideas, political beliefs, ideology or even sharing resources.

“So, on that note, this alliance hinges on how to allocate seats in order to defeat the much stronger ruling party,” Zaid said.

He expressed some concern, however, on the PAS factor that still lingers in the scope of PPBM’s efforts to oust Najib.

“When PPBM talk to PAS they do not want Pakatan Harapan to be included in the discussion, because it seems that PAS are allergic to both DAP and Amanah.

“This is unlike Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s usual way of doing things. In all the years that I have known him, he is always clear-cut in his approach and incisive in his actions. He is not the sort that fudges on difficult issues,” Zaid said, adding that Mahathir’s strength lies in his clarity of thought and strength of conviction.

Surprised over PPBM’s desire to still want the flexibility to talk to the Islamist party considering PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s open support for Najib’s leadership, Zaid said the answer lies with PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin.

“The people are waiting for the Number One in PPBM to clarify things.”
