PUTRAJAYA:
Anwar Ibrahim’s family and the opposition will use whatever avenues they can to continue the struggle to free him from prison.

This includes filing an application to the Pardons Board for clemency.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said: “We have prepared the proposal on the basis that there was a miscarriage of justice.”

Nurul, who is Anwar’s eldest daughter, told reporters outside the Federal Court that regardless of the court’s decision today, Anwar’s family, the opposition, and Anwar’s supporters were convinced of his innocence.

“We are convinced of his innocence and so we will stand proudly and continue our struggle.

“The kleptocrats can rejoice a little longer but I’m pretty sure that justice will be served.”

Anwar failed in his final attempt to use the courts to clear himself of a sodomy conviction after the Federal Court dismissed his review application today.

A five member panel led by Chief Judge of the High Court of Malaya Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin said there was no merit to review the application.

Meanwhile, Anwar’s lawyer N Surendran said neither Anwar nor his family accepted the decision. Therefore, he, along with Anwar’s other lawyers, would be studying the judgement before determining their next course of action.

“We are getting a copy of the judgement and we will study it and we will announce our next course of action as soon as possible,” he said.
