PAYA JARAS:
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the Islamist party will not become a “stepping stone” for other parties to trample on and win elections.

“I’m sorry, but we will only work with parties that respect us,” he said in reiterating that PAS would not compromise when it came to seat allocations.

Speaking at a ceramah that was jointly organised with PKR and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) last night, Tuan Ibrahim said PAS would contest in the same seats it had vied for in the 13th general election (GE13), without exception.

He said in the past, as part of the then Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition, PAS had compromised and given up seats for its allies.

Tuan Ibrahim told reporters later: “There will be no compromise this time and the other opposition parties need to respect that.”

Tuan Ibrahim’s stand on seat allocations in the election comes days after he declared there was no point working with Amanah – a PAS splinter party – as it had no seats that it had won as Amanah.

Existing Amanah MPs and state assemblymen won their seats contesting under the PAS banner in GE13.

He had also said then that joining forces with Amanah would not bring any “added value”.

Meanwhile, asked about the signing of a memorandum of understanding between PPBM and Pakatan Harapan – to take place later today – Tuan Ibrahim said the party had no issue with it.

He said it was up to PPBM if it wanted to be the bridge between PH and PAS.

PPBM, he explained, was free to cooperate with any party, but repeated that PAS would not join the opposition coalition which currently comprised PKR, DAP and Amanah.

PAS had previously stated it would never work with DAP and Amanah.

“That said, it does not mean there cannot be any cooperation on the condition they respect our seats and that we want straight fights (with the Barisan Nasional). If there is no respect, then there is no use in us working together.”

More than a thousand people turned up for the ceramah last night which saw the likes of PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin and PKR’s Sivarasa Rasiah, who stood in for party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, address the crowd.
