Mohamad Sabu, or Mat Sabu, said the uncertainty stemmed from the unpredictable global economy and the slow demand from Malaysia’s biggest trade partner, China.
“If predictions of a slow economy for 2017 become reality, Najib may abort his plans to ‘ambush’ the opposition by calling for the dissolution of parliament before May next year.
“However, delaying the election can threaten his own political survival,” said Mat Sabu in his opening speech at the Amanah national convention here today.
Many are speculating that the 14th General Election may take place some time next year, as the recently tabled Budget 2017 appeared to be aimed at winning over voters.
Budget 2017 was dubbed an “election budget” as it was filled with goodies. But Mat Sabu believes the goodies are not enough to win over the voters.
“The feel good factor Najib is aiming for is just a short term solution.
“But when the cost of living increases due to the GST and the removal of subsidies, the public will forget all about the goodies,” he added.
