PAS queries ATM chief’s visit to Myanmar

PAS vice-president says visit by Malaysian Armed Forces chief to Myanmar reveals Putrajaya not serious in fighting for Rohingya rights.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) chief’s visit to Myanmar to restore relations between the two countries shows Putrajaya is not serious in protecting the rights of the Rohingya, said one of PAS’s vice-presidents.

Iskandar Abdul Samad said Prime Minister Najib Razak must explain Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin’s actions as it clearly contradicted the government’s stance against Myanmar’s military tyranny towards the Rohingya community.

“The visit would be acceptable if the presence of the armed forces chief there was to warn the Myanmar government.

(However) The Myanmar Times reported Zulkifeli was in Myanmar to restore relations between the two countries,” he said in a statement.

Iskandar added that the move was contrary to the firm stance by Najib, who in his speech at the Rohingya Solidarity  rally last Sunday, described the persecution of the Rohingya community as a humanitarian issue that must be opposed.

In fact, Iskandar said Najib’s speech gave the impression that the prime minister was firm about the Rohingya issue even if it affected Malaysia’s relations with Myanmar.

Najib also condemned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung Sang Suu Kyi for refusing to meet with Malaysian representatives to discuss the Rohingya issue.

According to the Myanmar Times report, Zulkifli met Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw and the head of the armed forces of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing.

During the meeting, Min told Zulkifli that there was no violation of human rights in regard to the Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar.
