KUALA LUMPUR:
The ethnic cleansing of Myanmar’s minority Rohingyas is not an acceptable Asean behaviour, says Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“People are being burnt alive, women are raped and children are chopped up alive.

“This is not an Asean behaviour that we can accept,” Najib said during his winding up speech at the Umno General Assembly 2016.

“We will not tolerate cruel and uncivilised behaviour. We will demand for them(Myanmar) to make things right again. This is Umno’s stand, “ he told a cheering crowd.

Malaysia has been increasingly critical of Myanmar’s handling of violence in the northern Rakhine state that has sent hundreds of people fleeing across the border to Bangladesh, amid allegations of abuses by security forces.

The violence is the most serious bloodshed in Rakhine since communal clashes in 2012 that killed hundreds.

In protesting the escalating violence against the Rohingyas, Malaysia cancelled the national soccer team’s friendly under-22 matches with Myanmar recently.

On Friday, Myanmar’s deputy director-general of the President’s Office U Zaw Htay said Malaysia should respect sovereign affairs and follow the Asean policy of non-interference in other member countries’ internal affairs.

Najib said his attendance at the planned large-scale rally against the continuing violence against Rohingya Muslims was not a matter of meddling in Myanmar’s internal affairs, but about defending humanitarian and universal values.

Najib said he would also be representing the more than three million members of Umno in the rally.

Senior government leaders, led by Najib, are expected to participate in the solidarity march on Sunday in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa at 8.30am.
