The wing’s chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, in her opening speech at the Umno general assembly today, said international “crooks” such as Hungarian-American business magnate George Soros should not be allowed to influence the country’s path.
“Let us take a note out of similar incidents involving the Arab Spring in the Middle East, and the Orange Revolution in Ukraine.
“Until today, these revolutions have resulted in instability in the affected countries’ political and economic sectors.
“(So) issues concerning the country’s sovereignty should not be tolerated and we condemn any form of foreign intervention,” she told delegates at the Putra World Trade Centre here.
Arab Spring was a revolutionary wave of violent demonstrations and protests that began in Tunisia in 2010, later spreading throughout the countries of the Arab League and its surroundings.
Power struggles in the affected counties went on even after the incident in 2012.
Claiming that Soros was the country’s biggest enemy, Mas Ermieyati said anyone who “worked with him to bring down the government” must be perceived as a traitor.
“Even if those individuals had once contributed to the country,” she added, without naming anyone.
Last month, a document purportedly from the minutes of a June 22, 2015, meeting of Soros’ Open Society Foundations’ (OSF) Malaysia Programme, which involved discussions on the promotion of free and fair elections, was leaked by DCLeaks.
It has resulted in government and pro-government groups throwing various allegations of foreign intervention to overthrow the government on local organisations said to have received funding from the OSF.
Numerous police reports have been lodged against Bersih, Merdeka Center and Malaysiakini who were named as the recipients of OSF’s grants.
The police swiftly formed a special task force to investigate the matter.
