KUALA LUMPUR: The police are monitoring certain NGOs and may make more arrests, says Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said the police were currently collecting evidence and would take action against the NGOs when the times came.

He was commenting on the Pusat Kesedaran Komuniti (Empower) office that was raided yesterday.

“The police raided Empower’s office because we had found evidence that indicated the NGO had received funding from foreign bodies, such as the Open Society Foundations.

“‘Kalau cinta negara’ (If we love our country) we should be careful with whom we deal with, especially with foreign bodies,” he told reporters after receiving 10 units of Kawasaki KLX250 sponsored by Felda Global Ventures in Bukit Aman here today.

Police raided Empower’s office in Section 4, Petaling Jaya, for investigations into activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy and under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Empower member and lawyer Honey Tan Lay Ean told FMT that this was the exact procedure police had used when they arrested Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah after they raided the Bersih office on Nov 18.

Empower, which was also founded by Maria, is an advocacy group aimed at encouraging female participation in the political process.
