PETALING JAYA:
CIMB Group chairman and ardent Chelsea fan, Nazir Razak has been appointed to the board of the Queens Park Rangers (QPR) football team.

In an Instagram post, Nazir, who is Prime Minister Najib Razak’s brother, declared that a new interesting challenge awaited him.

“I will do my best for QPR while I am on board,” he said in a posting which was accompanied by a screenshot of an article by West London Sport, with the headline “Semi-retired banker and Chelsea Fan made director of QPR’s Holding Company.”

Nazir’s appointment to the post will see him join his close friend, Tony Fernandes who is the majority shareholder in the London club.

In June this year, it was reported that Fernandes had reduced his shareholding from 69% to 55%, while fellow Malaysian shareholder, Ruben Gnanalingam, had increased his interest in QPR to 33%.

In July 2015, Ruben was named co-chairman of the club with Fernandes, who controls the club via his company QPR Asia Sdn Bhd.

Ruben, who is the chief executive officer of Malaysian port operator, Westports Holdings, controls his stake in QPR Holdings Limited, the Championship club’s parent company, through Total Soccer Growth Sdn Bhd.

The other major shareholder in QPR is steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who owns 11% of the club.

Another Malaysian who has been appointed to the board at Loftus Road is former PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia executive chairman Johan Raslan.

Fernandes first involvement with QPR was when he bought 66% of the club in August 2011 from F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

QPR currently occupies the 15th spot in the Championship. They most recently played in the top tier English Premier League in the 2011-2012, 2012-2013 and 2014-2015 seasons.
