This follows Khalid’s claim that Sosma was used on Maria to combat the Open Society Foundations’ (OSF) attempt to purportedly topple the BN government.
Khalid had said Maria’s arrest had nothing to do with the Bersih 5 rally. He said she had been detained because the police needed time to investigate certain documents seized during the raid on Bersih’s office .
In a statement issued by Bersih’s steering committee today, Bersih challenged Khalid to produce the alleged evidence proving Maria’s involvement with OSF.
“The IGP’s claim that there were so-called documents discovered during the raid is outrageous and has no basis whatsoever,” Bersih said.
“Bersih 2.0 is fully aware of what documents were taken from the office. It is absurd to suggest that documents belonging to us can be linked to a threat to security.
“Bersih 2.0 was given a copy of the ‘Senarai Pemeriksaan’ that lists the items seized which clearly shows that there is no such evidence.”
Bersih also noted the authorities’ change of stance, and criticised Khalid’s claim that the arrest had nothing to do with the Bersih 5 rally.
“This is a complete about-turn by the authorities. Until now the authorities and various government leaders have given the impression that Maria had threatened national security by organising the Bersih 5 rally,” the NGO said.
According to a report by Malay Mail Online, Khalid had contradicted himself when he revealed that Maria was also being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for not fulfilling requirements for a public assembly, in addition to Section 124C of the Penal Code, related to acts detrimental to parliamentary democracy.
“(The detention was) for us to decipher the evidence that we had found in the office — all the computers and documents that we’ve seized. We need time to go through (them),” Khalid had earlier told reporters.
“Maria herself has admitted to receiving money from OSF once. We all know what OSF is, and how many countries in the world that it had toppled through its ways.”
