According to The Star Online, Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem directed the 25 BN MPs in the state, including those who were Muslim, not to support the bill scheduled for a second reading in Parliament before the session’s end tomorrow.

Sarawak has five more MPs from DAP and one from PKR.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian was also quoted as saying that state BN component parties would not support the bill.

“SUPP has always opposed the Bill because it is not in the spirit of what we originally signed in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“The chief minister’s stand, together with Sarawak BN, on hudud still applies.

“SUPP has instructed its MPs to oppose the Bill if it comes to a vote.

“All state BN component parties are united in this matter,” Sim told a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly complex following a meeting with Deputy Chief Ministers Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Abang Johari Openg and James Masing today.

Masing is Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president and Abang Johari and Uggah are Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president and senior vice-president respectively.

Sim said the establishment of two criminal justice systems contradicted the Federal Constitution and affected the rights and lifestyles of all Malaysians.

“The Kelantan assembly passed the amendment of Kelantan’s Shariah Criminal Code 1993 last year but couldn’t enforce it due to the existing Act 355. The Private Member’s Bill intends to address that.

“Once again, PAS has not only shown blatant disregard to the rights and sentiments of all racial and faith groups within our nation, but has also consistently challenged the spirit of the Federal Constitution for political mileage.”

The motion to table RUU355 was moved by Marang MP and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting began on Oct 17 and will end tomorrow.
