DBKL wants to fight bid on parking rates

It wants to seek leave from the court to give its views during the leave stage for judicial review.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) wants to be a putative respondent in a legal challenge against it by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok and a consumer group.

Senior federal counsel Natra Idris said: “It wants to seek leave from the court to give its views during the leave stage hearing (to commence judicial review).”

She was speaking to reporters after meeting High Court deputy registrar Norazlin Othman.

The court has given the group and Kok, a DAP national vice chairman, until Dec 1 to raise objections.

Kok and Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, president of the Selangor and Federal Territories Consumers Association, filed a judicial review last month to quash DBKL’s decision to increase parking rates in the city.

They claim members of the public were not consulted on the hike.

They want the court to revoke the appointments of Vista Summerose and Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan to collect the new parking fees.

Besides DBKL, Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor and Mayor Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz were named as respondents.

On July 18, DBKL announced a 150% increase in parking rates in the central business districts.

Previously, motorists had to pay 80 sen to park for an hour. Now, it’s RM2 an hour.

The affected areas include Bukit Bintang, Bukit Damansara, Sri Hartamas, Desa Hartamas, Solaria Mont Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar.
