KUALA LUMPUR:
PAS lawmaker Mahfuz Omar is ready to face diciplinary action for having attended the Bersih 5 rally along with some of his party comrades.

This follows a rebuke from PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to all party members who had attended the rally on Saturday, saying that action will be taken against them. Hadi said this at the Terengganu State Assembly yesterday.

Hadi’s statement contradicted PAS Syura council member Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, who had earlier stated that PAS doesn’t support the Bersih movement but it’s members are allowed to join the rally.

“I can’t stop anyone from referring me to the disciplinary committee. It is up to the party to judge if this is an offence.

“What ever I did, I did for the rakyat. I attended Bersih for the Malaysian people,” Mahfuz said to reporters when met at the parliament lobby.

According to the Pokok Sena MP, there were six other PAS members who participated in the rally, including three assemblyman, namely Amiruddin Hamzah, Syed Azman and Nasir Mustapa.

“My view is that it is fair for us to attend Bersih 5. The rally is for the people and we attended the rally for the people,” he said, adding that Bersih did not disturb anyone during the rally.

Meanwhile, speaking of the next general election (GE14) and the strong presence by all major opposition parties except PAS at the rally, Mahfuz said it was imperative that PAS join a political pact soon.

“This is because PAS cannot be contesting alone in the upcoming polls, as it will lead to a ‘big risk’ between PAS and Umno.

“Because if PAS and Umno fight for votes, it will lead to three-cornered fights,” he said, adding that he also believed that his participation at the rally will not affect PAS-Umno relations.

“So, if PAS wants to be safe and lower the risk of losing, they must have a political pact.”
