Deputy Speaker Maktar Shapee had closed the debate session on Friday after no representatives were seen interested in taking part.
Law said he had heard some people grumbling that Maktar’s decision was unfair and that there was no bell chime indicating resumption of the debate session on Friday.
“You are supposed to be in the chambers to present your debate and you missed the chance. So, it is your fault.”
Law reminded the elected representatives not to shirk their responsibilities as lawmakers and carry out their duties well.
He also defended Maktar for calling off the debates as it was within his powers to do so.
However, Law relented this morning after assemblymen proposed resumption of the debate.
“I have given it some thought and have decided to reopen the session, although I feel I should not have,” he said.
Wong Hon Wai (DAP-Air Itam) had proposed the resumption of debate. This was seconded by RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) and Opposition leader Jahara Hamid (BN-Telok Ayer Tawar).
This decision will allow 17 assemblyman to continue the debate.
The debates resume today until 11.30pm. The assembly is expected to adjourn this Thursday.
