“I think parents should be responsible and refrain from bringing their children to the rally.

“Parents can attend, but leave their children at home with a responsible adult,” she told FMT when contacted.

In the previous Bersih rallies, it was widely reported that parents still brought their children to the assemblies despite being warned not to do so.

Section 4 of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 states that it is an offence to bring along children under the age of 15 to rallies, even if the child is accompanied by a guardian. Offenders can be fined up to RM20,000 upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah told FMT that they had done their part by reminding parents through the media and social media.

“We have also been putting up posters. Nothing else that we can do. We can only advise them, but we can’t ban them from attending.”

When asked if Bersih would reprimand irresponsible parents should they bring their children along, Maria said they won’t report it to the authorities.

“We won’t report or ask them to take their children home, but they should know their responsibilities as a parent.”
