KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysiakini’s editor-in-chief Steven Gan may summon the Attorney-General (A-G) to testify at his and KiniTV’s trial in the Special Cyber Court here.

Gan and KiniTV were today charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) over videos of a press conference by former Umno Batu Kawan vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, which were posted on the Internet TV portal.

In the video, Khairuddin had called for the AG’s resignation.

Gan said he would be talking to his lawyers about the possibility of subpoenaing the AG to testify in court.

“He will have to explain why reporting on someone who criticises a public officer is a crime,” he told reporters outside the Sessions Court.

He also said that the prosecution was a case of conflict of interest.

“This is because the AG’s Chambers is charging a media outlet for putting a video allegedly insulting the AG himself,” he said.

“We will prove to the court that by covering a press conference we did not commit any crime,” he said, adding they are only doing their job.
