Nur Jazlan: Penang Voluntary Patrol Body must register first

He asks Penang government why it is being stubborn in refusing to register with the home ministry.

PETALING JAYA: The Penang government has been asked to register its new volunteer unit called the Voluntary Patrol Body (BPS), launched on Sunday.

The BPS is to replace its Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS), which was banned in November last year.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said any group performing security-related roles must be registered under the home ministry, thesundaily reported.

“This is to prevent abuse of power and position. They may be involved in any unethical or illegal activity.

“For example, there is a risk of them abusing their identity to extort money from the public,” he told the news portal.

“Why is the state government so adamant? And now they are trying to circumvent the law,” Jazlan said.

He did not rule out the possibility of BPS members being arrested for operating without registering with the ministry.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had said that all BPS members had been vetted by the police.

BPS is formed under the Village Development and Security Committee to look after safety and security. It is also to assist members of the public during rescue and emergency situations.

BPS has been set up in 40 areas, with RM30,000 allocated in each area. There are now 607 BPS members.
