Bersih rally: Warning to teachers participating

Education minister says those taking part will face disciplinary action.

Mahdzir-Khalid
KUALA LUMPUR: All teachers have been warned not to participate in the Bersih rally this Saturday or face disciplinary action.

Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid said among the disciplinary action that could be taken was suspension from duty.

“Apart from teachers, officers and staff of the education ministry, state education departments and district education offices found to be involved in the rally will also face the same action.”

Mahdzir said this to reporters after opening the two-day Bett Asia Leadership Summit 2016 here today.

The minister also called on parents and guardians not to allow their schooling children to attend the rally.

Earlier in his speech, Mahdzir said Malaysia was facing the same challenges as other countries, particularly on the issue of teachers’ effectiveness and performance in the classroom.

“I have to admit that Malaysia’s education has been very exam-oriented.

“Therefore, under the current transformation plan, the ministry is in the midst of implementing the school-based evaluation system.

“In order to ensure effective delivery in the classroom, the quality of teachers will be further enhanced through various measures.

“This includes raising entry standards into the teachers’ education programme, revamping teacher training institutes and improving teacher’s professional development.”

He said the Malaysian education system needed to integrate technology, innovation and creativity to stay relevant in a constantly changing world.
