PETALING JAYA:
More than 1,000 anti-Bersih leaflets were distributed at a PAS gathering today, sparking condemnation by the rally chairman Roslan Shahir.

He denied claims that the party’s Ledakan Suara Rakyat (Lasak) gathering today was a counter-rally to the Bersih 5 street demonstration planned to be held in Kuala Lumpur next Saturday.

Roslan, while issuing the denial, denounced the distribution of anti-Bersih posters at the rally, held at Taman Medan here.

“Don’t distribute these kinds of posters. We (PAS) are a party that has been around for over 60 years, and this is not our culture,” said Roslan. The posters would only paint a negative image of the Islamist party as one which “knows how to play politics”, he added.

The posters sighted by FMT said: “To gather at the mosque is cleaner than to gather with the opponents of Islamic laws.”

The posters also stated that it was obligatory (wajib) for Muslims to reject the Bersih 5 rally because Bersih supporters had “insulted religious scholars”, were “sponsored by the Jews”, and the rally was “masterminded by (PAS splinter) Parti Amanah Negara and DAP”, and was a “gathering of vices”.

The Nov 19 rally, organised by the electoral reform group Bersih, is calling for institutional reforms, and the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak.

PAS has announced it will not take part, saying the rally’s objectives greatly differed from the electoral watchdog’s original goals.
