SHAH ALAM: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin Yassin is confident of a possible formal alliance with PAS.

Speaking at a press conference after the first Pakatan Harapan convention here today, Muhyiddin said it was PPBM’s policy, as a new party, to cooperate with all opposition parties.

Having attempted to form a political relationship with PAS, Muhyiddin said the first meeting he had with the Islamist party went well, and he was waiting to meet with them again.

“PAS has expressed willingness to discuss matters related to the next general election, including that of ensuring a one-to-one fight,” he said.

His party, he said, was waiting to meet PAS again “before we officially form an alliance, perhaps through a memorandum of understanding. I will wait for their response.”

Last week PAS Youth leader Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz confirmed that his party was holding discussions with PPBM, but that certain matters had to be ironed out before the two parties could agree on a political alliance.

PAS leaders have insisted that the party would never work with DAP again after the latter strongly objected to their plans for hudud criminal penalties for Islamic offences.

However, when speaking to the convention today, Muhyiddin stressed PPBM’s commitment to join Pakatan Harapan, but said the party needed time to work on a common framework first.

News reports have claimed that the postponement in setting a common framework was because Muhyiddin was hoping to bring PAS into a joint effort with Pakatan Harapan to take power in Putrajaya.
