Keep core voters at heart, says Mat Sabu

Amanah president says that forging alliances with other parties must not come at the expense of opposition's traditional supporters.

SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Harapan must work on retaining its core voters instead of working with just anyone for survival, says Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

Citing the victory of Donald Trump in the recent United States presidential election, Mohamad, who is also known as Mat Sabu, said Trump had won because he succeeded in securing the votes of America’s core group, by emphasising (white) supremacy.

He said Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton had used American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, “but Trump doesn’t need Lady Gaga. He only needs the public’s support. That’s why if we want to win (the next general election), we cannot afford to lose our core voters.”

Speaking at Pakatan Harapan’s first convention, held here today, he said: “No matter who we want to be friends with, don’t do it at the expense of our core voters.”

Mat Sabu reaffirmed the need for a united opposition front to take down the Barisan Nasional at the next general election.

“Any party, if it stands alone, will not be able to win the elections. So it’s better that all opposition parties work under one logo. If this can happen, we will be the strongest party in Malaysia. This is what the public is hoping for,” he said.

More than 1,000 people attended the convention, from 8.30am until 5pm today.

Among top opposition leaders present today were former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin Yassin, and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.
