Guan Eng: Focus on the economy, not hate politics

Umno's racial games won't work if economic issues are highlighted, says DAP secretary-general

SHAH ALAM:
Pakatan Harapan should avoid stooping to Umno’s strategy of racial and religious fears but focus on economic matters, says DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

He predicted that the Barisan Nasional and Umno would employ the politics of identity, to instigate the people through racial and religious issues because the ruling coalition had failed to manage the economy.

“But the economy is the main issue in our country right now,” he said in a speech at the Pakatan Harapan’s first convention, held here today.

“We have to show that Pakatan has a solution to this, and that we can rescue the rakyat from the poor economy. If we can do this, I’m sure BN will fall. Don’t put too much trust on ‘experts’ or what is published in the mainstream media.

“Go to the ground and speak to the taxi drivers. They will tell you that they are all against BN now. Economy, economy, economy, that is what the Rakyat is most concerned about.”

Lim also drew a parallel between Umno’s strategies and those employed by Donald Trump in his victorious campaign for the US presidency.

“Some said Trump won by instilling fear amongst the Americans, I think this dirty tactic would not have worked if the US economy was healthy and strong,” he said.

He said Americans decided to have a change in administration because they were living with the effect of a poor-performing economy. They voted for a change, despite the controversies surrounding Trump, including allegations of sexual harassment.

For this reason, Pakatan Harapan should now switch its strategy to focus more on economic matters.
