PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has no plans to legalise online football betting, says Second Finance Minister Johari Abdul Ghani.

He said this when responding to a question by Anthony Loke (DAP-Seremban), who sought a commitment that the government would not grant such permits, The Star Online reported.

The news portal said Loke also urged the government to limit the number of special lottery draws as it encouraged punters to gamble more.

“The special draw was allowed in 1999 as a means for the government to raise revenue to assist families of victims of the Nipah virus.

“However, the government continued to allow the special draws to collect extra revenue for its coffers.”

Johari said the government would review whether to limit or cancel permits for 22 special lottery draws by lottery operators.

The news portal said Johari informed lawmakers that the government collected RM952 million from gambling taxes in 2014, RM637 million in 2015 and RM464 million as of September this year.
