KUALA LUMPUR:
Foreign workers are not allowed to work as security guards in national schools, said Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan, adding that security companies who flout this rule will have their contracts terminated.

He said the services of 25 security companies have been terminated since last year.

“That makes up 30 per cent of security companies. They are not allowed to hire foreigners.

“I hope reports will be made aganist them. If needed, we will tighten the procedures (for security companies to be hired),” he replied to a question by Anuar Manap (Umno-Sekijang) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Anuar had asked if the ministry will hire retired army or police personnel to work as security guards in schools.

The Hulu Selangor lawmaker added the tender process for hiring security companies is done through a rotation basis.

Security companies had voiced their dissatisfaction over the short period of time given by the Education Ministry in issuing tenders to manage 12,000 schools in the country.

Security Services Association Malaysia (PPKKM) president Mustapa Ali had said companies awarded tenders were given the acceptance letter at the last minute and did not have enough time to prepare for the job.
