Misuari accuses Malaysia of masterminding kidnappings

The Moro rebel leader claims even the Sipadan hostage taking was done by Malaysia using Moro people.

PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia is using the Moro people in kidnap-for-ransom activities in Mindanao, Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Chairman Nur Misuari charged Thursday.

“Our source is saying that since Malaysia is the one which is involved in this kidnap-for-ransom (activities), probably, one day, I will drag their leaders into the International Criminal Court,” The Inquirer quoted him as saying.

Speaking from the presidential podium at Malacanang palace, he added: “I have all the (pieces of) evidence in my hands. My people are everywhere and besides, they cannot escape because they are hiring my own people.”

Misuari, who was once close to Malaysian leaders, claimed the taking of 21 tourists and resort workers as hostages on Pulau Sipadan, Sabah, in 2000, was the work of Malaysia which used Moros.

Reports then had said it was the work of Abu Sayyaf bandits.

“Even Sipadan, they hired my cadre officers, because they opt for the millions,” he said, according to The Inquirer.

Misuari also claimed that Malaysian officials sent feelers to him for a meeting in Saudi Arabia and in Indonesia through his nephew.

“I said: ‘Stop it, I don’t have the heart to see these people after they make this conspiracy to destroy the honour and integrity of my people,” Misuari said.

Misuari’s allegations, which was made in the presence of President Rodrigo Duterte, comes before a two-day official visit by Duterte to Malaysia next week.

Misuari had travelled to Manila from his lair on the southern island of Jolo after a local court suspended a warrant for his arrest over a bloody siege on Zamboanga City in 2013.

Misuari had earlier assured Duterte of his support for the peace process in Mindanao, where Muslim rebel groups are operating.
