He plans to propose joint border patrols with Malaysia, according to a report in the Manila Times.
Speaking to reporters in Davao City on Tuesday night, Duterte said: “There’s a need for us, the three countries – Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia – to talk about this seriously, and to put a stop (to it) because it has somehow paralysed the trade and commerce in that area.”
Duterte will be in Malaysia from November 9 to 10.
He said he wanted intensified maritime patrols in the waters overlapping the boundaries of the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, which are infested by armed pirates including the Abu Sayyaf group.
Meanwhile UPI reported Duterte as saying he would also discuss joint operations to combat the Abu Sayyaf group with Najib. The Abu Sayyaf militants are known for terrorism and kidnapping in the Philippines, and they, and other militants stationed there, have also kidnapped several Malaysians in the past.
Duterte said he had already discussed a unified policing effort against piracy and the militants with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
Duterte said Malaysia and the Philippines must also address “border crossings” of pirates and terrorists to the Philippine island of Sulu, an Abu Sayyaf hotbed located in waters between the two countries.
