Penang Banjir Lagi
GEORGE TOWN: Heavy rain since 4pm caused flooding at hundreds of homes, including a village near Kampung Melayu Air Itam, and other parts of Penang island today, Deepavali day.

Traffic came to a standstill along Jalan P.Ramlee, Jalan Paya Terubung, Jalan Thean Teik, Taman Lumba Kuda and Jalan Masjid Negeri with thousands of vehicles stranded.

Water rose as high as knee level in Jalan Thean Teik and Jalan Masjid Negeri causing the area to be cut off.

Bernama reporters found the Sungai Dondang and Sungai Air Hitam to have spilled over their banks.

People living at Kampung Melayu and along Jalan Thean Teik expressed shock at suffering the worst flash floods ever .

V. Visvalinggam and his wife K. Vasanthi whose Deepavali celebration was interrupted by the flood said that such a flash flood had never happened before in the five years they had lived there.

“It had rained heavily and I saw the water rising at an alarming rate. This is the first time we are experiencing a flash flood,” he said.
