He was referring to the incident where a cardiology department doctor was mistaken for a robbery suspect and aggressively tackled by an elite police force unit at a food stall outside the Serdang Hospital on Friday evening.
He said police should not be solely blamed for the incident as they were merely doing what they did best.
“I think at the end of the day, this should be treated as a learning experience for both the police and us,” theSundaily reported him as saying.
He empathised with the plight of the doctor but said a preliminary report showed the policemen had reacted by pursuing the 28-year-old as he defied police orders to stop.
“When the police ordered the doctor to stop, he continued running in the direction of the suspected criminals. When he fell and the police caught up with him, he allegedly started punching the policemen, leaving the officers no choice but to apprehend him.
“He told them he is a doctor but the police took him to the police station to verify this.
“Anybody can be wearing the blue surgical scrubs, or stethoscope he had on him.”
It was a misunderstanding and a very unfortunate incident, Jeyaindran said, adding he had ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The news portal also quoted Sepang Police Chief ACP Abdul Aziz Ali as saying the case was a “genuine mistake.”
“What can we expect the policemen to do when someone runs after being told not to?”
He said the federal police Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc) unit had clearly identified themselves and told everyone at the stall not to run as they were there to catch a bunch of criminals.
The doctor however claimed he joined the others in running away as he thought the hooded men were robbers.
The report said the unit succeeded in nabbing all seven suspects at the stall.
