PETALING JAYA:
The number of arrests made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has increased over the last few years.

Citing data from the MACC website, the New Straits Times reported that there were 701 arrests in 2012, but that the number had dropped to 509 the following year.

In 2014, it went up to 552, followed by 841 last year. Of the 841 offenders, 398 were civil servants.

The report said 670 people had been arrested on suspicion of corrupt practices so far this year. This includes 323 civil servants. The highest number of arrests occurred in 2011, with 918 cases.

The website also has a “Corruption Offenders Database”, where some 543 people convicted for graft, including several “Datuks”, are listed, along with their details and photographs.

Among the prominent individuals listed are former Immigration Department director-general Wahid Md Don and former Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Department director Dr Noor Soeraya Norsham.

Wahid was jailed six years and fined RM300,000 in 2013 for accepting RM60,000 from a businessman to speed up visa approvals for foreign workers while Noor Soeraya was sentenced to two years in jail in January last year on four charges of fraudulently using forged documents for her financial gain.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (operations) Azam Baki said the website would enable employers to check if any potential employees had been convicted for graft.

He said the “Hall of Shame” also served as a lesson for others not to be involved in corruption.
