DOSH: Safety switch of tower crane tampered with

Now, it is trying to find out who did the tampering that led to the death of a motorist when a hook from a crane fell on her car in Kuala Lumpur.

PETALING JAYA: The safety switch controlling the crane tower involved in the death of a motorist in August was tampered with.

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) confirmed this today.

Now, it is trying to determine if foul play was involved and who did the tampering, reported theSundaily today.

If the safety switch had been working properly, it would have been stopped from operating outside the stipulated perimeter above the road.

“Our investigation has confirmed that the safety switch was tampered with. One of our officers went to the scene, and he confirmed it,” DOSH Director-General Mohtar Musri told a press conference today, the news portal stated.

Woman driver Chim Khoon Sing was killed when the tower crane’s 300kg hoist block (hook) gave way and fell on her car in Jalan Raja Chulan on Aug 25 at 7.20pm.

Mohtar said an investigation paper had been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for legal action.

DOSH is still running tests on the crane’s equipment and this would take about a month to finish.

The news portal also quoted MCA Public Services and Complaints Department Chief Michael Chong as saying his lawyers had informed him that there was no specific provision in the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 on the required safety perimeter for construction lifting machinery.

Therefore, he called on the government to implement a ruling to regulate the operation of tower cranes.
