PAS Youth Vice-Chief Khairil Nizam Khiruddin confirmed that his wing will try to make an appointment with Adenan soon.

Adenan was recently reported to have asked all Sarawak MPs to reject the private member’s bill tabled in the Dewan Rakyat by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

In June, he said that his Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, the dominant party in the ruling coalition, would not support the so-called hudud bill.

Hadi’s bill seeks to amend the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1995, and is scheduled for debate in the Dewan Rakyat this month.

“We hope that Adenan will allow Muslim MPs to support the hudud Bill. They should take part in the parliamentary debate on the Bill,” Khairil said in a statement quoted by the Borneo Post.

Khairil said Adenan should be fair and allow the MPs not only to take part in the debate but support it as well. “We need the support of all Muslim MPs,” he said.

The bill requires a simple majority of 112 votes from the 222 MPs for approval by the Dewan Rakyat. “Adenan’s support is crucial for this,” Khairil said.

He believed that only non-Muslims were against the Bill. “They fear it will affect them,” he said, but pointed out that syariah courts do not have jurisdication to punish non-Muslims.

“Non-Muslims need not fear, he said. The purpose of the bill was to elevate the Syariah Court.

In Sabah, the MP for Kimanis, Anifah Aman, who is foreign minister, has already said that he will vote against Hadi’s bill.
