The four men, including two Sabah Water Department (SWD) senior officers, were remanded today for further investigations into alleged kickbacks from Federal projects in Sabah. The projects were said to be worth up to RM3.3 billion.
The two officers – a director, 54, and his deputy, 51 – as well as the deputy director’s businessman brother, 55, who is a Datuk, and the Datuk’s accountant, 50, were all brought to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie allowed the application by the MACC to remand them for a week.
MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner of Operations Azam Baki told the news portal that the RM52 million in cash was seized from various places, including the SWD officers’ homes and office, while their bank accounts containing RM60 million had been frozen.
According to Star Online, the total cash seizure was likely to be the biggest the MACC had ever made.
Nine luxury vehicles, 94 high-end handbags, jewellery and luxury watches were also seized.
Azam said it was believed that more money was kept in banks in a neighbouring country, but he refused to give details.
