PETALING JAYA:
No arrests have been made in the investigation into alleged abuse of power by a Tourism Malaysia official with the title “Datuk Seri”.

The Star Online today reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had recorded statements from 16 witnesses so far.

It said MACC would be calling up a high-ranking official for questioning “very soon”.

“It does not matter the amount involved as we will carry out investigations once there is evidence of corruption,” said an MACC source.

Among those questioned were several officials from Tourism Malaysia, a director and former director of a travel company, as well as its secretary.

The report said MACC officers camped out at the Tourism Malaysia headquarters earlier this month to probe the top official’s alleged abuse of power, including criminal breach of trust.

The investigations point to possible siphoning of funds via Tourism Malaysia’s procurement and advertising divisions, it added.

The report said MACC is investigating the purchase of flight tickets from a travel company, said to be owned by family members of the Datuk Seri.

MACC Investigation Director Azam Baki confirmed investigations were on-going.
